The original nucleus of Pallerone, called the Verdentro, consisted of a fortified village. The Malaspina family had a key role for the village since 1275, with the Marquises Malaspina of Olivola who kept the possession for centuries. In the seventeenth century, Alderano radically transformed Pallerone, moving here the main seat of the feud and transforming the castle into a stately residence. The castle, now privately owned by the Malatesta family, has been restored and opened to the public. The large hall, with seventeenth-century frescoes attributed to Stefano Lemmi, and the chapel dedicated to San Gaetano Thiene, along with the hanging garden with a Ligurian mosaic, are the main attractions of this luxurious seventeenth-century residence, often used for public and private events.
