Licciana Nardi, immersed in the Lunigiana and the Appennino Tosco-Emiliano National Park, fascinates nature lovers with its breathtaking landscapes. The fortified village offers narrow streets animated by inns and craft shops, with the castle transformed into a fortified palace.
The territory of Licciana Nardi boasts many ancient fortifications: the Castle of Monti, originally a defensive fortress transformed into a stately home between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, combining medieval, renaissance and baroque styles. Even the Castle of Bastia, built at the end of the thirteenth century to counter the Apennine raids, shows an imposing structure with corner towers and windows Guelph cross. Finally in Terrarossa, another large castle of the Malaspina still garrisons the Via Francigena.
Among the parish churches, stands out Santa Maria Assunta a Venelia-Monti, dating from the eleventh century but rebuilt in the eighteenth century, preserving the Romanesque apse. The Pieve di San Nicolò in Varano houses an important altarpiece by Angelo Puccinelli, painter of the fourteenth century.
Nearby is worth a visit the village of Apella, characterized by a medieval tower and the birthplace of Anacarsi Nardi, patriot Risorgimento. To the name Licciana was added Nardi in honor of Anacarsi and Biagio Nardi.
