In the municipality of Mulazzo, among the first hills of the Val di Magra, stands the ancient Castle Malaspina Castevoli. Founded in the year 1000 by the Estensi, it then passed to the Marchesi Malaspina, who counted among their guests also Dante Alighieri. After becoming an autonomous fief under the rule of Tommaso Malaspina, a popular uprising put an end to the Signoria and, for the castle, two centuries of abandonment followed. In 1990, the painter and sculptor Loris Nelson Ricci, together with his wife, the Swiss Erika H. End, rebuilt the ancient castle from its ruins. After eight years of impressive restoration, the "new" castle was inaugurated: inside there are numerous sculptures, paintings, drawings and architectural projects.
