Podenzana

Podenzana is a charming town surrounded by greenery, built around the year 1000 on the right bank of the river Magra. It was ruled by the Malaspina from 1306 and became an autonomous marquisate in 1536.

Among the monuments stands the Castle of Podenzana, built by the Malaspina, was demolished and rebuilt several times.
The current version, dating back to 1950, is a solemn manor with austere facade, decorated chapel and armoury. On Mount Gaggio there is the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Neve, dating back to the seventeenth century, linked to a tradition of Marian apparition. Finally, in Montedivalli, the ancient Pieve di Sant'Andrea, a Romanesque jewel, dominates three splendid valleys.

Podenzana offers many opportunities for lovers of outdoor activities, with hiking and cycling tours through centuries-old chestnut trees, but also a special opportunity for food lovers: Every August Podenzana celebrates the Madonna della Neve with the Sagra del Panigaccio, a typical local dish.
