Ponzanello

Ponzanello is an ancient fortified village, between Aulla and Fosdinovo, located on a strategic hill overlooking the valley. The first mentions of Ponzanello date back to 1185, indicating it as an important settlement already at the time. It is later documented as the seat, archive, library and safe of the Bishops-Counts. It is believed that it was organized as a municipality already in 1200, making it one of the first free municipalities of Lunigiana. Among the oldest buildings are the Church of San Martino, also known as the Old Church (12th century), and the Chapel of San Filippo Neri, or New Church (13th century). The castle of Ponzanello, although not accessible inside, still retains its mighty structure. In the past, the castle was defended by four portals and even a threefold wall, testifying to its strategic role.
